Since September 2014, the new National Curriculum has made learning a language compulsory in Key Stage 2. 

At Heighington CE Primary School, we believe that communication is a vital skill for all of our children, which includes the ability to communicate effectively in other languages. We aim to promote this by ensuring all children in KS2 (Years 3 - 6) have the opportunity to learn how to listen, speak, read and write confidently in a second language.  An understanding of different countries and cultures promotes a culture of respect and tolerance, which encourages our young people to be considerate and active members of our global community. 

We aim to build an MFL curriculum, which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills and which enables children to access the wider curriculum as well as prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life.

Implementation

All children in KS2 currently have 30- 45 minutes of French per week, which is taught by their class teachers. Details for each stage of the curriculum can be found below:
